FAQ
Antonia Köster and Sindri Lederer rank among their generation`s most successful performers of chamber music. After having won numerous international competitions and creating the renowned Notos Quartet, both musicians look back on an active international concert career. They have been supported by members of the most significant chamber music groups of our time, such as the Alban Berg-, Guarneri- and Mandelring Quartets, and the Beaux Arts Trio. In our hectic, consumer-oriented and superficial times, one thing is of paramount importance to these two young musicians: an awareness of that which is essential, music.
How did we meet?
The love we share for chamber music brought us together over ten years ago. We met while attending a master class and soon realized that we wished to play chamber music together with several musician friends. The programme initially consisted of piano quintets, however a piano quartet instrumentation soon became a permanent feature. This ultimately led to the establishment of the Notos Quartet, now one of the leading ensembles of its generation. Experiences shared over the years such as rehearsals, lessons, concert tours and coming to terms with ups and downs have allowed us to become, as musicians and as human beings, an outstanding team of musicians who understand each other without words.
Why a duo?
The duo is the most intense form of chamber music, allowing the musicians to concentrate completely on one another. Unlike the wonderful multifaceted nature of the piano quartet, which often appears orchestral, it is the intimate dialogue of the duo that appeals to us. If a quartet be comparable to a conversation among friends, then playing a duet feels like having an intimate talk with one`s best friend. Whenever possible, we particularly enjoy studying the fascinating duo literature. By virtue of our shared musical experience, our interpretation automatically expresses a deep bond, and is therefore a unique experience of chamber music rather than a spontaneous encounter of two soloists.
What meaning does music have for us?
Music expresses man`s deepest emotions. Our intention is to convey these, a task which requires great care and love. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate in being able to study the works of the great masters and it is a matter of great concern to us that we study each piece conscientiously, in order to ultimately reveal its uniqueness. Studying a piece is like embarking on a long journey which never ends and continually leads to new discoveries. Working with the pieces extensively, together, we wish to explore their depths and thus achieve a common musical statement.
What makes attending our concerts worth it?
A duo concert with two soloists who come together for the occasion and then depart, each going his own way, can be easily planned. We, however, are a practiced team, look back upon years of experience, experience gained under all kinds of circumstances. In the course of intensive rehearsals, a world of its own emerges from each piece, a world which we wish to reveal to our listeners during the concert. We aim to, at the highest technical and musical level, transport the concert-goer into another world, thus enabling him to get in touch with himself, far away from an overstimulated daily environment. We take him on a journey to a world beyond words, in which one can return to one`s center.
What audience do you wish to address?
Music exists for each of us, be he young or old, have musical training or not. In order to be touched by music, one need merely be willing to withdraw from the apparently everpresent stress and time pressure and open oneself to the music.
What is the nicest compliment you ever received after a concert?
Somebody once told us, „After the concert, I felt like a better person.“ That was the most wonderful compliment we could imagine. If we succeed in touching people with our music, then we have achieved our goal.
